The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) has started a project to rebuild the access route into the Vale of Avoca ravine starting at the west end of the St Clair Avenue bridge (see map). This access staircase has been closed since 2014, forcing users to access the ravine from below St. Clair at David Balfour Park.
This access staircase is required by a fairly steep descent into the ravine, and connects to the paths running north and south on the west side of Yellow Creek. The wooden steps have undergone significant deterioration over the years, compounded by serious erosion of the ravine slope itself.

According to the TRCA, the project will involve geotechnical studies looking at slope stability and erosion, followed by design and then installation of the access stairs. The St. Clair staircase project is proceeding in parallel with the development of a master plan for the full Avoca ravine, encompassing slope and channel remediation as well trail system configuration and design.

Because of its visibility and location – around 200m from the subway entrance and close to the Yonge/St. Clair population – the St. Clair access point has the potential to be a principle gateway to the local ravine and beyond.
Additional information and updates on this project are available at the TRCA website: TRCA St Clair Staircase Project Website.
